Empowering Tribal Artisan in Manufacturing Improved Farm Tools & Equipment

ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Umiam, Meghalaya

        A seven days training programme on “Empowering Tribal Artisan in Manufacturing Improved Farm Tools & Equipment” was conducted at Agricultural Engineering, DSRE, ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Umiam, Meghalaya which was scheduled during 11th -17th March 2026. The training programme was organized by AICRP on FIM centre, Agricultural Engineering, Division of System Research and Engineering in collaboration with the ABI Centre, ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Umiam, Meghalaya. Funded by Tribal Sub-Plan (TSP), it aimed to train the local artisans and youths to empower them and encourage them to start enterprises in manufacturing of improved farm tools and equipment suitable for northeast India. Participants received hands-on training on workshop machines, including lathe, milling, hydraulic press, sheet rolling, power saw, woodworking, drilling, sheet shearing, hydraulic surface grinder, welding, and spot-welding machines. This was followed by practical fabrication of small farm tools and equipment, such as briquette moulders, adjustable row markers, garden rakes, etc. A total of 11 local artisan/youths nominated by District Rural development Agency, DC office, Nongpoh, Ri Bhoi District and ABI Centre, ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Umiam, Meghalaya from Ri Bhoi and East Khasi Hills districts of Meghalaya, have actively participated the training programme. It was successfully organized and coordinated by Dr. Aniruddha Roy, Dr. N. Uttam Singh, Dr. Hijam Jiten Singh, Dr. Huidrom Dayananda Singh and Er. Ajaykumar Kethavath under the supervision of Dr. B.P. Singh, Nodal Officer, TSP and Course Director of the aforesaid training programme.
